Long awaited by peers in Chala Ref, 'univerSOUL' is Zulu's reflection on his adolescence and upbringing, with the joy brought by family and friends to the struggle of finding self-love as a young black man in America. Rest in peace Cathy Wilson, whose death is described by Zulu as to have had a significant impact on not only his character making for a key inspiration for making this album. She was said to have been a glue that kept many family members together. Special thanks to everyone involved in the Chala Ref family and for the support given throughout this process, we love you all. Many hours were spent on the neo-classic instrumental styles along with the more experimental and psychedelic elements to this project, as much thought was handled into the progression and interludes to paint an imagine of reminiscence through sleep.
